Washfountains Application Guidelines

Deep Bowl Classic Washfountains

The Deep Bowl Classic Washfountains are designed for quick and efficient washing of heavily soiled hands and arms. The "Classic" is always the best choice for applications where users require moderate to heavy duty hand washing.

Using a Sentry or Multi-Fount for these types applications is one of the most common errors in specifying washfountains. This error often occurs when a specifier wants to save water and energy or meet ADA requirements. Consider the following before recommending ADA compliant, low flow fixtures:

  1. Fixtures designed to conserve water will not obtain the water savings expected because heavy-duty hand washing takes longer with inadequate water flow.
  2. When used at full capacities (often the case during break times and shift changes) the "Classic" uses less water per person than fixtures designed specifically for water conservation.
  3. Not all applications require ADA compliance.
  4. ADA compliance requires a shallower bowl. Heavy duty hand and arm washing will inevitably result in wet, slippery floors
  5. Don't use all ADA compliant fixtures when most of the users are not physically impaired.
  6. Using a separate barrier-free Terreon® lavatory in addition to a washfountain may be a better way to provide ADA compliance.
  7. Consider using the ADA compliant Terreon® Deep Bowl Washfountain which provides many of the advantages of the traditional deep bowl classic.
  8. Where water conservation is the primary concern we can provide sectional control on classic washfountains.

Bowl material is another important consideration when specifying a Classic Washfountain. Use the following chart to help select the best material for the application:

Terreon® Deep Bowl Washfountains

The Terreon® Deep Bowl Washfountains are designed for quick and efficient washing of heavily soiled hands and arms where ADA compliance is required (only infrared units are ADA compliant). The Terreon® Deep Bowl Washfountain is the best choice for applications where users require moderate to heavy-duty hand washing and ADA compliance.

While this fixture should be used for school shop areas, art classes and other classroom environments; the Multi-Founts are better suited to school rest rooms where the fixtures will be used without supervision. The Terreon® Deep Bowl Washfountains are not as vandal resistant as the Multi-Founts and school rest rooms generally do not require heavy-duty hand washing. Consider the following points when specifying Terreon® Deep Bowl Washfountains:

  1. The "Classic" washfountain is still the best choice when heavy duty hand washing is the primary consideration and ADA compliance is not required.
  2. The "Terreon® Deep Bowl" is the only ADA compliant washfountain designed for hand and arm washing.
  3. The contemporary design of the "Terreon® Deep Bowl" provides a less institutional look than the "Classic" washfountain.
  4. The Terreon® bowl material provides many of the advantages of terrazzo without the weight, and many of the advantages of stainless without the institutional look.

Common Applications

Key Considerations

  • Manufacturing Facilities
  • Retrofit Applications
  • Repair Facilities
  • Schools
  • Stadiums
  • ADA compliant (not all models)
  • Wall mounted unit available (36" semi-circular only) - can be mounted at juvenile height
  • Still suitable for hand and arm washing
  • Extremely durable, NAHB certified material
  • Stain and burn resistant
  • Easily repaired
  • Flexible stainless steel supply connections
  • Preassembled pedestal and valve set
  • Light weight - about one-third the weight of terrazzo
  • Medium cost

Multi-Founts

The Multi-Founts are designed for ADA compliance,(except the Corner-Fount) water conservation, vandal resistance, and elegant appearance. The Multi-Fount is the best choice for applications requiring light to moderate duty hand washing and ADA compliance in a good looking washroom fixture.

As described in the previous sections, using the Multi-Fount for heavy duty hand washing applications is one the most common errors in specifying washfountains. Another very common error is the failure to specify juvenile height when appropriate. Consider the following points when specifying Multi-Founts:

  1. The shallow bowl and low flow rates are not designed for heavy-duty hand washing.
  2. Consider the need for juvenile height fixtures for all schools, as well as any application where children will be the primary users.
  3. With a flow rate of .5 GPM per station the Multi-Fount is perfect for applications where water and energy conservation is a primary concern.
  4. The Multi-Fount is the best choice for applications where the look of a traditional washfountain would be too institutional.
  5. Wall mounted versions are available.
  6. The granite look and feel helps to hide water spots and soap residue.
  7. The smooth lines and limited number joints make the Multi-Fount easy to clean.
  8. The Multi-Founts are among the most vandal resistant fixtures made.

Multi-Founts are available in precast Terrazzo or Terreon®. Due to differences in molding Characteristics we do not offer the same styles of operation in both materials. Use the following chart to help select the best material for the application:

Sentry Washfountains

The Sentry Washfountains are designed for light to moderate hand washing and ADA compliance with the durability and stain-resistance of stainless steel. The Sentry Washfountain is the best choice for applications requiring light to moderate duty hand washing and ADA compliance in an all stainless steel washfountain.

Using the Sentry Washfountain for heavy duty hand washing applications is one the most common errors in specifying washfountains. Another common error is specifying a Sentry Washfountain with foot control when ADA compliance is required. The 17" toe clearance required for ADA compliance wouldfoot control too awkward for able-bodied users and would still require additional controls for a wheel chair user. Consider the following points when specifying Sentry Washfountains:

Sentry Washfountains

  1. The shallow bowl and low flow rates are not designed for heavy duty hand washing.
  2. If powdered soap (not an option on the Sentry) or foot control are specified, a Deep Bowl Classic Washfountain is probably a much better choice.
  3. Bradley offers the only pedestal mounted ADA compliant 36" semi-circular washfountain .
  4. Stainless steel construction and optional infrared controls make the Sentry Washfountain an excellent choice for applications where hygiene is a primary consideration.
  5. With a flow rate of .5 GPM per station the Sentry Washfountain is perfect for applications where water and energy conservation are primary concerns.
  6. Wall mounted versions are available.
  7. Only Bradley has an all stainless steel pedestal as standard equipment.
  8. Hand and foot controlled washfountains are not ADA compliant.

The Sentry Washfountain is only available in stainless steel. Use the following chart as quick reference guide for specifying the Sentry Washfountain.
